Here a selection of my photos from our trip through the South of Japan, from Tokyo to Nagasaki. We traveled mostly by public transport, the city Metro systems, the Japan Rail (JR) Express and the superfast Bullet trains (Shinkansen) ‘all in all’ a total distance of 3000 km.
I can’t exactly remember when my fascination for Japan had started. Maybe early 2000 when I read my first Haruki Murakami novel (‘The Wind-up Bird Chronicle’) and became interested in Japanese literature, movies, composers and the history of Japan. Definitely my visit to the Haute Photography Exposition in 2019 in Rotterdam and in that year their special focus on a small group of Japanese photographers kicked me in the right direction, I was literally blown away by their work. I suppose there my wish arose to visit Japan, to see and experience this beautiful country even only once in my life … so a dream came through in the summer of 2024. どういたしまして,

The 'forgotten Popfestival in Hilversum (the Netherlands) aka 'SUMMERCONCERT 74' on July 18, 1974 at the Gemeentelijke Sportpark Hilversum with Earth & Fire (NL), Alquin (NL), John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra (USA), Tim Buckley (USA), The Doobie Brothers (USA), Van Morrison (did not perform because of an incident) and The Allman Brothers Band (USA) - here also pictures of the ‘surprise appearance of the Amsterdam Hells Angels during the Doobie Brothers show.
The Dutch Summerconcert ‘74 with over 20.000 visitors was only 2 days before the very first Knebworth (UK) 1974 festival on 20 July with almost the same international line-up e.g. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tim Buckley, The Doobie Brothers and The Allman Brothers Band.
Interesting to mention that the Allman Brothers played their very first gig outside the USA at this festival on the 18th of July 1974 in Hilversum, The Netherlands.

Finding myself super annoyed at how easily people hurl their empty soda cans onto the street, I wondered why most of these discarded cans were from the Red Bull brand. So in 2017 I formed a strange habit of shooting these flat Red Bull cans with my iPhone, with the vague idea of creating a photo collage of all photographed cans, as a protest against the pollution in the cities we live. Later in 2021 I continued this ‘project with trashed flat empty Coca-Cola and beer cans - Instead of photographing them with my iPhone on the spot like I did with the Red Bull project in 2017/18, I took the flat cans from the street, brought them home, selected the ones I wanted to photograph and photographed them against a white back-drop with a professional camera to create extra sharpness. As much as I hate to see trashed cans all over our streets I see also the beauty in some of the flat road cans and see similarities with some photo-realistic painters and their art work.
In case you were wondering, I tossed all of these flat (and sometimes half full) Red Bull cans, into the trash bin; my service to the ‘fast and furious’ Red Bull drinker, who was probably too high on caffeine and didn’t have the time and decency to dispose them correctly.

just for the fun I started in 2017 to colorise some of my old family black and white photo’s using the Selection and Colouring layering techniques in Photoshop. Of course I had to scan them first using my Epson V600 and ‘clean and remove all spots and scratches from the digital files before starting the colouring process, but that was (for me) also part of the fun. Check here some of the photo’s I did and see how really old photo’s live up and how my parents, grand parents, my uncle Oom Jan who died in the 2nd World War and other close family members started to live up again even from photo’s made around 1920.
